Unai Emery has admitted that Jose Mourinho’s sacking by Manchester United is “not good news”.
The Red Devils decided to end Mourinho’s tenure at Old Trafford after the Portuguese coach was appointed as Louis van Gaal’s replacement in May 2016.
Manchester United succumbed to an embarrassing 3-1 loss to Liverpool FC at Anfield on Sunday evening following goals from Sadio Mane and Xherdan Shaqiri.
Arsenal finished the 17th round of fixtures in fifth place and eight points ahead of Manchester United in the race to secure a top-four finish.
Emery’s side missed out on the chance to beat rudderless Manchester United earlier this month after a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford.
The Gunners failed to move further clear of Mourinho’s side at the weekend following a 3-2 defeat by Southampton at St Mary’s last weekend.
Speaking at his media conference ahead of Arsenal’s clash against Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday night, Emery said:
“The only thing I can say to you is I was surprised – and it is not good news because, when one coach finishes his work like that, it’s not good for other coaches.
“It is not good news but I don’t know a lot as to why this decision happened. My focus is tomorrow on the derby (against Tottenham), the focus for me and for every player is just that.”
Mourinho won the Europa League and the League Cup in his first season at Old Trafford after the Red Devils dismissed Van Gaal.
Manchester United secured their best finish in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era last term after they finished in second place behind champions Manchester City.
The Red Devils will take on Cardiff City in Wales on Saturday afternoon.
