The highly rated 18-year-old winger will spend this season at Hoffenhiem whom he joined on loan earlier in the summer and scored for on his debut. However, he could easily have been in the starting lineup on Wednesday as Arsenal dispatched their Championship rivals in the Carabao Cup.
Emery who made some bold changes to his starting lineup in that game, with the likes of academy product Emile-Rowe Smith starting alongside Alex Iwobi –who also recently graduated from the Arsenal academy to become a mainstay in the first team– revealed that Nelson could be given a chance in the first team on his return from loan.
“Players like Emile Smith Rowe, like Joe Willock, like Eddie Nketiah and also Reiss Nelson are interesting to me,’ said Emery.
‘But we decided it’s better for Reiss to go on and take this responsibility and get experience of games with a good level in Germany. I think that’s good.’
Speaking on his selection for the Brentford game, he said ‘We can give players chances to play, chances to take confidence and minutes in the game.
‘The possibility is to give the players who are playing less in one competition to take minutes and these responsibilities going forward.”
Given the obvious lack of natural wingers in the squad, if Nelson should build upon his good start to life at Hoffenhiem, a straight path to not just the first team, but the starting lineup would very well be a possibility.
